Backtest a strategy before risking real money

Manual backtesting with Bar Replay and automatic testing with TradingView's Strategy Tester, the numbers to track and the usual traps.

Why backtest

Backtesting means running your trading rules over past data to find out whether the strategy has an edge before you risk real money.

Two ways on TradingView

Manual: Bar ReplayRewind the chart, play candles one by one, decide entries and exits yourself and log them. Slow but trains your eye.
Automatic: Strategy TesterWrite the rules as a Pine Script strategy and TradingView calculates the results on historical data.

What to measure

Number of tradesAt least 50–100 to mean anything
Win rateWinning trades / total trades
ExpectancyWin% × average win − loss% × average loss; must be positive
Max drawdownThe biggest drop from an equity peak; can you stomach it?
Longest losing streakSo you are mentally prepared

Common traps

  • Over-optimising: tuning settings to fit the past perfectly, then failing live.
  • Look-ahead bias: using information you would not have had at the time (an unclosed candle, for example).
  • Ignoring costs: spread, swaps and slippage make real results much lower.
  • Too little data, or only one market regime.
TipAfter backtesting, run the exact rules on a demo account for a few weeks (forward test) before using real money.
