The EMA 34–89 system: how to use it and enter trades

An EMA pair widely used by Vietnamese traders: read the trend, enter in the zone between the two lines, and know when to stay out.

Why 34 and 89

34 and 89 are Fibonacci numbers. The setup is very popular among Vietnamese traders: EMA 34 stands for the short-term trend and EMA 89 for the medium-term trend. The space between them is treated as a value zone where traders wait for price to return.

On TradingViewAdd Moving Average Exponential twice, lengths 34 and 89

Optional extra filterEMA 200

Reading the trend

  • Up: price > EMA 34 > EMA 89, both sloping up and clearly apart.
  • Down: price < EMA 34 < EMA 89, both sloping down.
  • Sideways: both lines flat and tangled → stay out.

Buy setup (mirror it for sells)

  1. A clear uptrend on your trading timeframe and the one above it.
  2. Wait for a pullback into the zone between EMA 34 and EMA 89.
  3. Enter on a bullish confirmation candle (engulfing, pin bar) inside the zone.
  4. Stop below the EMA 89 or below the latest pullback low, whichever is further.
  5. Take profit at the previous high or at 1:2; exit fully when a candle closes below the EMA 89 and the EMA 34 starts turning down.
Watch outEMA 34–89 is a trend-following system: it loses repeatedly in sideways markets. The condition "lines apart and sloping the same way" matters more than the entry itself.
TipThe first touch of the EMA zone after a new trend forms is usually the best one; later touches tend to work less often.
