The best time to trade gold
Gold trades almost 24 hours a day from Monday to Friday, but liquidity and volatility are far from even. Knowing which hours carry the volume helps you choose when to look for setups and when to stay out.
The three sessions
The Asian session (Tokyo, Sydney, Shanghai) is usually the quietest for XAU/USD, with tighter ranges unless Chinese demand or overnight news drives a move. The London session opens around 07:00 to 08:00 UTC and brings the first large wave of volume; the London gold fixing auctions at 10:30 and 15:00 London time are reference points for physical markets.
The New York session opens around 12:00 to 13:00 UTC. The overlap between London and New York, roughly 12:00 to 16:00 UTC, is when gold usually sees its deepest liquidity and its widest moves. Most US economic data is released at 12:30 or 14:00 UTC (one hour earlier when the US is on summer time and Europe is not, and vice versa during the clock-change weeks).
Volatility versus opportunity
More movement is not automatically better. A strategy that depends on clean breakouts benefits from the overlap, while a mean-reversion approach may prefer the calmer Asian hours. Measure the average range of the hours you trade, set stops wider than normal noise for that window and size positions accordingly.
Hours to be careful with
The daily rollover at 21:00 to 22:00 UTC brings wide spreads as liquidity providers reset. Friday afternoons in New York often see position squaring before the weekend, and Monday's open can gap after weekend news. Around top-tier releases such as US CPI, payrolls and Federal Reserve decisions, price can skip through levels in seconds.
Building a routine
A simple routine: check the calendar each morning, mark the pivot zones, decide in advance which session you will trade, and use the position size calculator so that a wider stop in a volatile hour does not mean a larger loss.
