The formula
The classic pivot is the average of the previous high, low and close: P = (H + L + C) / 3. The first resistance is R1 = 2P - L and the first support S1 = 2P - H. The second levels add or subtract the full range: R2 = P + (H - L) and S2 = P - (H - L). The third levels extend once more: R3 = H + 2(P - L) and S3 = L - 2(H - P).
Other methods exist. Woodie pivots give the close more weight, Camarilla levels cluster closer to the close and suit range trading, and Fibonacci pivots apply 38.2%, 61.8% and 100% of the range around P. The tools page on this site calculates all five methods side by side.
How traders use pivots
Pivots are popular because they are objective: everyone using the same session data gets the same numbers, so orders tend to cluster around them. Price above P is often read as a positive intraday bias with R1 as the first target zone; price below P points to S1. A break and close beyond R1 or S1 can lead to a test of the second levels.
Pivots work best combined with context. A level that coincides with a prior swing high, a round number or a high-volume area is more significant than a pivot standing alone. Treat each level as a zone and wait for price to react before acting.
Which session data to use
For daily pivots on forex and gold most platforms use the session that closes at 17:00 New York time. Weekly and monthly pivots use the previous week's or month's high, low and close and are useful for swing trading. Make sure your chart and your calculator use the same session definition, or the levels will not match.
About the data
Prices come from public sources (Yahoo Finance, gold-api.com) and the calendar from the ForexFactory public feed. The page is rebuilt every three hours; figures can lag the live market, so always confirm prices on your own platform before acting.

Frequently asked questions
Are pivot points reliable?
They are reference levels, not predictions. Their value comes from the many traders watching them, and from combining them with trend and volatility.
Which pivot method is best?
Classic pivots are the most widely watched. Camarilla suits range trading; Fibonacci suits traders who already use retracements.
Can I use pivots on crypto?
Yes, but crypto trades 24/7, so choose a fixed daily close (00:00 UTC is common) and use it consistently.
Trading leveraged products such as CFDs, futures and crypto derivatives carries a high risk of losing money. This page is information and education, not investment advice.
