Step 1: the trend context
Start with the five-day change and the sequence of closes shown above. A run of higher closes with the price above the daily pivot describes an up-trend in the short term; lower closes below the pivot describe the opposite. When closes alternate and price keeps returning to the pivot, the market is ranging, and level-to-level trading usually works better than trend-following.
Step 2: volatility
Compare today's high-low range with the 20-day average daily move. If the session has already covered most of the average range, extensions are statistically less likely without fresh news, and stops placed too tight are easily hit. If the range is small, the session may still be waiting for a catalyst, often a US data release in the New York morning.
Volatility also decides position size. A wider stop needs a smaller position to keep the same cash risk. The position size calculator on this site does that arithmetic for gold, forex pairs and indices.
Step 3: levels
The pivot table lists the central pivot and three support and resistance zones. Treat each as a zone a few dollars wide rather than an exact line. The first test of a zone is the most informative: a clean rejection shows that orders are resting there, while a quick break with a close beyond it often sends price toward the next zone.
Step 4: the calendar
Gold reacts most to US inflation, employment and Federal Reserve communication. Check the event list before opening a position; a level that holds in a quiet market may not hold through a CPI release. Many traders simply stay flat for the minutes around top-tier data.
Momentum indicators
If you use oscillators, the Relative Strength Index is a sensible companion to this framework. Readings above 70 or below 30 describe stretched conditions, not automatic reversals. Our free RSI indicator for TradingView marks those zones and divergences on any timeframe.
About the data
Prices come from public sources (Yahoo Finance, gold-api.com) and the calendar from the ForexFactory public feed. The page is rebuilt every three hours; figures can lag the live market, so always confirm prices on your own platform before acting.
