Free RSI indicator

The Relative Strength Index is one of the most widely used momentum oscillators. Our free TradingView version keeps the classic calculation and adds clearer zones and divergence marks, so the reading is quick on any chart.

How RSI is calculated

RSI compares the size of recent gains with recent losses over a lookback period, 14 bars by default. RSI = 100 - 100 / (1 + RS), where RS is the average gain divided by the average loss, smoothed with Wilder's method. The result moves between 0 and 100.

Readings above 70 are traditionally called overbought and below 30 oversold. These words describe momentum, not value: in a strong trend RSI can stay above 70 or below 30 for a long time, and selling simply because RSI is high is a common way to fight a trend.

Three practical uses

Trend filter: in an up-trend RSI tends to hold between 40 and 80, in a down-trend between 20 and 60. A shift in that range is an early sign that the trend is changing character. Divergence: when price makes a new high but RSI makes a lower high, upward momentum is fading; the reverse at lows. Divergence is a warning, not an entry by itself. Pullback timing: in a trend, a dip of RSI toward 40 (up-trend) or a rise toward 60 (down-trend) often coincides with the end of a pullback.

Using RSI on gold

Gold trends strongly around macro events, so RSI extremes on the daily chart can persist. Many traders read the daily RSI for context and the one-hour or four-hour RSI for timing, combined with the pivot zones published on our gold price page.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RSI indicator really free?

Yes. It is published free on TradingView; no payment or account with a broker is needed.

What settings should I use?

The default 14 periods with 70/30 zones suits most markets. Shorter periods make RSI more sensitive and noisier.

Does RSI work on crypto?

Yes, it works on any market with price data, including crypto, forex, gold and indices.

Trading leveraged products such as CFDs, futures and crypto derivatives carries a high risk of losing money. This page is information and education, not investment advice.
